Interesting pair of articles on 360 vs PS3

Charlie Demerjian has written an interesting pair of articles over on The Inquirer.

They're a review of the relative paths of Sony and Microsoft vis-a-vis their consoles and the expected life cycle.

Before you Pooh Pooh them as "Just Another Sony Hata", may I point out that Charlie has a phenomenal number of industry insider contacts. He really knows the IT biz. He is sometimes wrong, but not often. There is a joke that HP and Intel staff were more often than not finding out about various insider projects and changes from Charlie rather than from any official channel.

The articles are Here and Here

(BTW, I kind of hope he is wrong. I may not want a PS3 but I want the competition that drives the industry)

Sony desperately need killer aps if they want to survive. At the moment they're pushing what is essentially the Saturn of the contemporary games market.

They are also a year behind M$, a dangerous place to be. M$ always play hardball. If Sony came up with a killer title, M$ could counter with a bundle for less than Sonys sell price. (A "Halo Pack" comes to mind)

There are few companies out there with deeper pockets than Micro$oft, and M$ are apparently already into the profit arc on this console.

I think Nintendo did the right thing by walking away from this particular pissing contest.

Yesterday I saw the US Christmas sales statistics, and in the fourth quarter of 2006, the second-highest selling console in America - after the Wii - was the PS2.

Given that Okami and Final Fantasy XII just hit the shelves this month, I suspect one of Sony's bigger competitors for the PS3 at the moment is actually the PS2. Why spend all that cash on the new machine when better games are currently coming out on the machine you already have? God of War II is going to PS2 as well, which is a mistake.

Th Xbox1 was 18 months behind th PS2,
and didn't display anything like a Moore's law doubling,
but M$ knows hype like a fish knows water,
and they made th sellin of their kludgy console
into th sellin of Halo.
As we know, it workd, and that pisses me off.
Consumers are like these big, ever-hungry, stoopid caterpillars,
easily lead cos they follow th arse of th one in front of em.

We'r sellin ourselves into slavery for shiny beads, ppl.
