I have exerts from that ballet on vinyl (you know, those big black CD's). It used to be one of my favourites along with the Nutcracker but I haven't listened to it for years. It is indeed the story of a man who invents a mechanical doll. If I remember rightly he tries to make her real by stealing the lifeforce of a man from the same village who is besotted with the doll Coppelia but the man's girlfriend pretends to be the doll instead to get him back so the whole thing doesn't work. I think everyone lives happily ever after.
