Dragon Quest VIII is a very decent and pretty turn-based Japanese RPG. Very old-fashioned, though.
Some great games worth looking for, assuming you haven't played them on another platform, would include:
- Okami - Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - Grand Theft Auto San Andreas - Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - Beyond Good and Evil - Psychonauts
The last two in particular are right up your alley. GTA probably not even near your street, I admit. : )
