Updates Updates Updates

Apparently it's no secret, so congratulations to Molly and Damian! Good luck with the firstborn! They are soooo much fun!

Saw both versions of "<mumble mumble> and the Chocolate Factory" for the first time last night. Now I want to go back and read the books again.

Some thoughts:

• The new one seemed closer to the book, except for the whole "Daddy?" subplot.
• Gene Wilder seemed closer in some ways to the book Wonka, but Johnny Depp was much weirder. Depp carried off the backchat that Wonka was capable of.
  
• Tim Burton's world was very much the Roald Dahl vision of unease.
  
• Burton also seemed to have a better sense of what the factory should look like, compared to Mel Stuart.
  
• The idea of Wonka being a strange recluse, completely out of touch with the real world and still being mentally stuck in the sixties or seventies worked well in the Burton version.
• Charlie, in the Burton version, came across much more the "pure innocent". The Charlie from the Mel Stuart version seemed more of a brat.
• Okay, what was with the "bad acid" in the tunnel in the Stuart version??? I think some of the lines and comments in the Burton version about flashbacks were a deliberate dig at the Stuart version.
• I loved Deep Roy playing all the Oompa Loompas. He got paid a million dollars for the role, as apparently he really did perform all the different Oompa Loompas, rather that them being CG copies.
• Did anyone else notice the similarities in looks between Missi Pyle in this film, and Lisa Marie in Mars Attacks? callistra and I were convinced it was Lisa Marie. Mr Burton lusting after his ex perchance?
