Linux has been, and still is a damn fine server product. It can be made to be a quite functional desktop environment.
Unfortunately Windoze is where the Apps are. I still run XP as my primary desktop, both at home and at work, simply because I can't get the apps I want on Linux.
Mind you the bickering over driver models that makes getting 3D acceleration so hard is also a downer...
