Okay folks, some numbers for you:
AVERAGE broadband speeds in Megabits / Second for:
  • Australia - 1.7Mb
  • USA - 4.8Mb
  • Poland - 7.6Mb
  • Korea - 45.6Mb
  • Japan - 61.0Mb
We're in a broadband Ghetto! Even the UK manages 2.6Mb

Sigh. I want to move up to ADSL2+, but I don't want iiNet's phone bundle, Amcom would, by all accounts, appear to be staffed by crack smoking monkeys, and my current ISP (TPG) would appear to have no plans to ever, ever roll out the high speed network they are proudly deploying over east. Sometimes living in WA sucks.

I was going to post about some tricksie things I used to do with VOIP, but iiNet seem to be selling 2+ unencumbered.

Go have a look. I was suprised.

They do sell it unencumbered, but also somewhat crippled, in that the download caps are miniscule. With no bundling, $60/month gets you 5GB/5GB, which is sucky. I get 1.5Mb/20GB for $50 from TPG, and I probably use most of that quota if I'm watching much NASA TV or Africa Wildcam. I expect to pay a bit more for 2+, but I'd have to spend $20 more just to get their best offer of 10GB/10GB, which still isn't as good, particularly given that Wildcam is on during peak times.

(wants to know how the figures were calculated. remember that there are lots of people who don't have it here - might really stuff up the figures)

It's based on people who do have it, not total per population.

Effectively it's saying we can't get decent internet here.

I was wondering if any of my friends were gonna adopt Japanese emoticons after they appeared on Boing Boing...

Thank you Mr Evilpaul.
