I may be caught up with Doctor Who, at last, but MMmm, the last two episodes (Journey's End and The Next Doctor) have been, how do I put this... less than stunning?
Cos whoever thought a "steampunk" episode would be cool clearly needs to be taken out and spanked. C'mon! A 50 ft STEAM powerd "Cyber King", complete with pistons and steam funnels. PUH LEASE!

IMO, of course

Hey, the cyberking was cool, as was Mercy :-)

It's just a shame that most of the rest of the ep was shite. I did like the subplot about the Next Doctor's slowly revealed story, and the Cybershades appealed on a visual level, but the whole 'we need to enslave 30 human children for a couple of hours' thing was ludicrous, as was the script's treatment of Rosita.

If you were ten, it would have been the coolest thing you'd ever seen.

It was cool! Utterly ridiculous and indulgent, but cool!

Why so serious? -_^

I found it more coherent than some of the other Specials (like the silly Titanic one).

See I didn't get that. I was disinterested in what was going on, found my suspension of disbelief pushed beyond it's tearing point and a little too much "Well all the cool kids are doing Steampunk" badly bolted onto the back of an otherwise almost workable story.

Take out the Cybermen and it would have probably worked a bit better. If not, take out the steampunk. The two together jar too much.

Fair enough. It's been a while since I watched it, so maybe it just left a better lasting impression than some of the other specials. I can't remember their excuses for mixing the two...

Not that I can think of any good recent examples of Steampunk in the movie/tv genre. They mostly seem to be bolted on as a cool style thing.

IMHO one of the worst episodes and certainly the worst special.
Honestly I'm still not sure why I tracked it down to watch it.
