What makes "Must Have?"

Okay, a question for y'all.

I want to know your (up to) 10 "Must have" Goth/Industrial Albums and why everyone should have it.

Feel free to contribute JUST ONE that you are passionate about, or go for the full 10 in you are enthusiastic.

VAST - Visual Audio Sensory Theatre
Marilyn Manson - Golden Age of Grotesque
Disturbed - The red cover with a pentacle on it one.
NightWish - Oceanborn, Wishmaster, Once
Depeche Mode - Singles 1986 - 1990 or the 4 disk remixes set
Evanescence - Both/Either
Rammstein - As long as it has the Evangelion song, I'm happy.

As promised:
Floodland: Sisters of Mercy. Arguably one of the "Definitive" Goth albums. Long anthems. Loads of Guitars. Patricia Morrison in the rain. Andy with No Shirt at all!

Peepshow: Siouxsie and the Banshees. A "transition" album for the Banshees. A good crossover point between the later more poppy stuff and the earlier more energetic stuff

Seventeen Seconds: The Cure. See Uncle Robbiy get depressed. See his mascara run. Run Mascara, Run! Defining "Angst Goth" one album at a time.

Lies Inc: SNOG. The explosive first album that launched Mr Thrussell onto the Australian industrial scene. "Corporate Slave" was a brilliant single and worth playing while driving through peak hour with the windows wound down.

Phantasmagoria: The Damned. Possibly the finest "goth" album these pioneers of the scene produced. Has "Grimly Fiendish" on it. Dave Vanian is so teeny tiny close up!

Fun With Knives: Velvet Acid Christ. "Oh god, Did you take all this acid? Tha's right! MUSIC". Sample driven goth/industrial grind with a pechant for Sci Fi samples. This has "Slut" on it. I play "Slut" a lot. I like that song.

Within the Realm of a Dying Sun: Dead Can Dance. The album of choice for Velvetgoths everywhere. Huge orchestral pieces with eerie overarching vocals. Bells! (And Lisa "Gladiator" Gerrard!)

1979-1983: Bauhaus. All the best bits without the weird "scream into the mike again Peter, it drives the girls wild!" type of tracks.

Okay, here's some of mine, in no particular order. Some overlap with other lists.

1) Front 242: Front to Front. Has Headhunter and Welcome to Paradise on it. If any electronic band that came after them doesn't cite them as an influence, they're lying.

2) Snog: Lies, Inc. Shop as usual, and avoid panic buying. While 3rd Mall From the Sun has good tracks like Cliche, nothing had the impact of the debut.

3) Skinny Puppy: Rabies. Oh, the controversy. SP fans either love or hate this Al Jourgensen-influenced departure from their usual style. I firmly come down on the loving it side.

4) Ministry: Psalm 69. Because it's a love affair; mainly Jesus, and my hotrod. Yeah, fuck it. Way less industrial than Land of Rape and Honey or The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste, but very influential nonetheless.

5) Sisters of Mercy: Floodland. Responsible for getting me into alternative music. Their best album, even with the bloated Jim Steinman overproduction.

6) Rammstein: Sehnsucht. The only all-German album to go platinum in the US. That’s not a reason for me to like it, it’s just an indication of how good it is.

7) Nine Inch Nails: Pretty Hate Machine. I prefer this to The Downward Spiral, I’m not sure why. Maybe Trent’s self loathing seemed less affected.

I’ll have to think about the last three. Candidates include:

I've tried to limit myself to one artist per slot, and no "best of" or singles albums. ;) So here is my 10 albums, in no particular oder.

1. Nine Inch Nails - Broken
First real industrial sounds that I got into. Happiness In Slavery, Wish, Last. The whole EP was ahead of it's time. The videos seriously scary.

2. Cubanate - Cyberia
More guitar Industrial. Serious stomping beats. Loved this album.

3. Velvet Acid Christ - Fun With Knives.
For exactly the same reasons Cheshire gave it. Really is still VAC's finest work.

4. SNOG - Lies Inc
Not really Gothic or Industrial but brings back a lot of fond memories for me from the early 90s.

5. Neurotic Fish - Gelb
Again not goth or industrial, but a part of the scene. Arguably better than Covenant. They are coming to take me away!

6. The Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
Quintessential goth. Must have in everyones collection.

7. Frontline Assembly - Artificial Soldier
Their best album in years. Real industrial again.

8. Depeche Mode - Violator
For me as goth as DM ever got. Another great album full of memories.

9. Ministry - Land of Rape and Honey
Old school. heh, actually very old school. Not quite industrial, but Stigmata was the song that got me into this crazy mess that im in.

10. Front 242 - Front by Front
Headhunter, and a couple of other classics. The one album I never managed to obtain

OK, several that other people have already mentioned, but classics are classics for a reason, neh?

Nine Inch Nails - Broken
Close call between having this and Pretty Hate Machine. Broken really is IMHO the angstiest side of Trent. This is when it was still all original. I'm recently rethrashing lots of my NIN stuff and I didn't realise how many bass lines or drum beats I hear on With Teeth and The Fragile that remind me of earlier stuff.

Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
Again a close call for me between Floodland and Vision Thing. Classic goth with Dominion, Mother Russia and This Corrosion. And of course Lucretia *grin* Vision Thing still has three of my favourites in Ribbons, When you don't see me and I was Wrong.

Ministry - Psalm 69
The best Ministry album ever made. Grinding vocals and screaming guitars barely held together by the drums. What more could a girl want? Like krjack said, it's a love affair, mainly jesus and my hotrod. Yeah, fuck it!

Snog - Lies Inc
Just so many tracks that I like. They have a rhythm and you can dance to them!

Leatherstrip - Fit for Flogging
I just like it. I love Nose Candy, and of course the classic AntiUS.
Our job is to execute the president, don't be so sensitive about it...

Machines of Loving Grace - Concentration
For me this was one of those albums I bought on a whim knowing very little about the artist. I feel I was greatly rewarded. An interesting blend of a gothy and electronic feel.

Front Line Assembly - Reclamation
Just because I can't pick one album, I have to go for the compilation. Again, I just like it coz it's got a beat and you can dance to it. Might be the throbbing beat too.

Portishead - Dummy
A great chill out album. Haunting vocals, bitter lyrics... could be a hint of goth?

Rammstein - Sehnsucht
No list of must have insdustrial albums would be complete without something in German. The language was made for industrial music! And this is just one of the best. I'm a sucker for heavy beats and screaming guitars.

The Tea Party - Tangents
Wonderful use of non standard instruments by this band really suckered me in. This again is a compilation coz I couldn't pick just one album.

NiN has the effect of polarising quite a few people. It's easy to start a fight with "Which one do you prefer - Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, Fixed, or The Downward Spiral?"
It's been pointed out that each major NiN release loosely chronicled a phase in Trent's life, and he's never held back about the fact. I like that an album can be just right for a mood or point in life.

I know it's so stereotypical, but I can listen to Violator on repeat and still enjoy the music halfway through the day. Name another album that you can do that to. Add a dash of Mike Shinoda - Enjoy the Silence and it would be the perfect album

Other favs are:-

Cubanate - Cyberia (maybe Barbarossa a little) when I want something base-ish and raw

Cell 7 - Precognition EP still gets a hammering when I want something a little old-school local

Cure - Wish for three songs : From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Trust, and Doing the Unstuck. Wallow in the despair!

Razed in Black for some great fast driving songs (the car only does 130kph tops which is probably a good thing :P )

There are others (many) but they depend too much on which mood I'm in to discern which one should be played...
