when I tried to read it, the book won. I got about 2/3 of the way through and just couldn't face any more. and I have cursed the names of all my friends who said it was a 'must read' book. :/
I had no problems with Perdido Street Station or The Scar, but Iron Council defeated me.
(It was the scene where they are fleeing for their lives from the Militia, every moment counts, it's a race against time, and they start describing the flora and fauna of the landscape that they are fleeing through in a leisurely way - for four or five pages...)
Looking for Jake: Stories is much more tightly written: I think I prefer Mieville-the-short-story-writer to Mieville-the-novelist.

Much as I enjoyed Gormenghast the BBC mini-series (I even bought the DVD), the book looked a bit too heavy going for me.
