Okay peeps. I'm mostly a RPGer, fond of Zelda and Mario. I'm not adverse to puzzle games and have a soft spot for Soul Calibur.

What games should I be looking out for on teh Playstation 2?

Things I am already actively working on acquiring:
  • Shadow of the Collossus
  • God of War
  • Final Fantasy whatever
  • Soul Calibur
  • Katamari Damacy
What else?

Ico, which is from the makers of Shadow of the Colossus but a bit better IMO.

Cool. I'll look out for it

I really should go back and scour your games reviews, shouldn't I?

I'm not a huge authority on the PS2, actually. I still don't actually own one myself - I've been borrowing one for the last year or so.

Dragon Quest VIII is a very decent and pretty turn-based Japanese RPG. Very old-fashioned, though.

Some great games worth looking for, assuming you haven't played them on another platform, would include:

- Okami
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
- Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
- Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
- Beyond Good and Evil
- Psychonauts

The last two in particular are right up your alley. GTA probably not even near your street, I admit. : )

Ta! I have yet to play PoP:TSoT despite owning a legitimate copy for the PC. Might actually be a better match with the PS2

I haven't actually played the PS2 version myself, but the game on Xbox was *awesome*.

I'll second Okami, Beyond Good & Evil & Psychonauts.

I too have never owned a PS2, but have played the second 2 on other platforms, and am avidly looking forward to Okami's re-release on the Wii.

Another multi-platform game you might like: Destroy All Humans. Sort of a sandbox adventure where you play an invading alien, set in the 50s. Lots of 50s alien/communism paranoia jokes, and some good mindless destruction.

Then there's *cough* Guitar Hero - love it or hate it. ^_^
It's much shinier, and supports DLC on the 360, but GH2 on the PS2 is great if you don't have any other consoles...

It's a real tragedy that Beyond Good & Evil and Psychonauts weren't massive, massive hits.

Beyond Good & Evil is at least getting a sequel though.

I was really surprised when I found that out. I assume Michel Ancel backed Ubisoft execs into a corner and demanded "no more Rayman without Beyond Good & Evil sequels!!" or something.

Ratchet and Clank is a surprisingly large amount of fun.

The Resident Evil series is always good, I've got Code Veronica if you want to borrow it (not the strongest title in the series but still fun).

I might take you up on Code Veronica.

First up I really should return the games I borrowed off Mynxii and Aph1d3l.

Best Resident Evil game is 4, IMO, but you can get that for Gamecube and Wii as well.

I second Grant's suggestion - Ico is just so freaking great.

I don't know if "God of War" is intended as a catch-all, but get #2 as well. Both fantastic games.

I haven't played it, but Okami is meant to be really good.

I don't know if you enjoy driving games at all, but the Burnout Series is great, particularly Burnout Revenge. They have entire game modes dedicated to how spectacularly you can crash your car, which is SO MUCH FUN.

And then, of course, there is Guitar Hero.

I'm very partial to the various Lego games - Star Wars (two games, but I imagine "The Complete Saga" is the best and most efficient way of getting them) and Indiana Jones.

Another vote for Ico here.
It's a work of art,
and will be rememberd in video gaming history.

I also enjoyed Primal for exploring & puzzling,
and State of Emergency for rampant destruction.

If you have the faintest inkling of appreciation for scrolling shooters, R-Type Final is IMO the pinnacle of the genre. Unless of course you prefer Bullet Hell.

SotC and Ico have already been sufficiently recced, or I'd rave about those ,too.
