What the --? I'm sure I remember you heaping praise on Linux way back when we were in that little flat on Walcott Street in '93 or so ;-). It's ironic (or something). You're switching to Linux again just as I've actually bought a Mac ;-).
Linux has been, and still is a damn fine server product. It can be made to be a quite functional desktop environment.
Unfortunately Windoze is where the Apps are. I still run XP as my primary desktop, both at home and at work, simply because I can't get the apps I want on Linux.
Mind you the bickering over driver models that makes getting 3D acceleration so hard is also a downer...

Along with all the other stuff you're likely to be trying for the first time in ages, give the icewm window manager a go. It's got a lot of very attractive themes while still being very very trim in profile. It gives your CPU and RAM back to your apps.

There are some good GUI apps in X11-land, but, development depends a lot more on developer interest than commercial interest.
